Broken Wings
Welcome to the opening ceremonies on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, from 17:00 to 19:00.
Sleep, sleep, meadow bird, tired, tired, wagtail.
The crow will bring the diaper, the sparrow the linen cloth,
the swallow a pillow for your head.
The artworks emerged from wordlessness. From broken wings and unreasonable points in life, when your wings fail to carry you and there are no right words of comfort.
As a painter I paint.
I paint resting places. Handmade, old, and mended covers, quilts and sheets. I believe that handmade things and the act of making by hand represent a time when life was slower and more forgiving. The worn and mended serve as a metaphor for life’s mishaps and overcoming them.
Artwork above: Hanna Räty, Red Blanket, oil on board, 90 x 75 cm, 2025
Hanna Räty lives and works in Juva, eastern Finland. She graduated from Free Art School in 1993 and has furthered her education at the Arts Academy in Turku in 2021.
Räty works mainly by painting and drawing but also creates spatial entities from her works. The handprint and the moment of painting are important to her. She does not only paint her own history, but also transgenerational things and things connected to the human experience in general, pursuing to evoke collective memory.
