In October, Galleria Aarni will present the final exhibition of visual artist Johanna Sinkkonen’s long-term project At The End Of The Day. Developed into several distinct bodies of work over the years, the project explores boundaries as both concrete and abstract concepts, examining identity, community, and inequality.
The exhibition at Galleria Aarni features media artworks, installations, and wall reliefs. The works delve into themes of grief, shame, loneliness, and rootlessness. Through these themes, Sinkkonen explores the complex relationship between memory and loss: how emotions and experiences are reflected onto other people, and how the revelation of hidden truths can alter our understanding of the past and the future.
Throughout the project, Sinkkonen has worked in several artist residencies in Finland, Japan, France, and Hungary. Different environments and cultural contexts have carried the works and their questions forward, while the project’s central themes have remained constant.
The title of the exhibition, At The End Of The Day – the writings are on the wall, refers to how warning signs are often already visible, yet we still choose not to look. As the project’s title suggests, does the end ultimately justify the means?
Visitors to the exhibition in Espoo will also have the opportunity to participate in creating the Perspective installation during a painting workshop on Saturday, 7 November 2026, from 12 noon to 3 pm. During the workshop, participants will paint their own eye onto pre-made sculptural elements. They will then decide where to place their eye within the installation. Participants can use either a mirror or their phone camera as a reference. The sculptural elements are made from recycled materials, and acrylic paints are used for painting. The Perspective painting workshop is open to everyone – no previous experience is required!
Johanna Sinkkonen (s.1983 Turku) is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Finland. She works with sculpture using metal and textiles, combining methods from community, spatial and media art. Sinkkonen is known for her public art, in which she has received numerous awards. Sinkkonen’s work has been seen at festivals and exhibitions in Finland and abroad and her works are in several collections, such as the Turku City Art Collection.
Works have been made in the following residencies: Arigatee Japan, Lumier Centre Japan, Tohmajärvi Artist Residency Finland, RaumArs A-i-R Finland, Outokumpu Old Mine Residency Finland, Cité internationale des arts France & Valóság Residency Hungary.

Johanna Sinkkonen (b. 1983, Turku) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and producer based in Turku. She studied visual arts in Helsinki and the Netherlands and began her studies in the flexible learning program at the Turku Arts Academy in the autumn of 2026. Sinkkonen works extensively in sculpture using various metals and textiles as materials, combining methods from community, spatial and media art.
Sinkkonen has spearheaded and contributed to numerous multidisciplinary projects across various art collectives, making a significant impact on her hometown art scene. Her work has been showcased at various festivals and exhibitions both in Finland and internationally. Her works are part of several collections, including the Turku City Art Collection.
Sinkkonen is particularly skilled in public art and community-driven, socially engaged art projects and she’s been honored with multiple awards in the realm of public art. Her commitment to community art and applied art stems from a deep interest in social impact and a desire to bring artistic processes into unconventional spaces.
In addition to her artistic work, Sinkkonen is the founder, concept designer, and producer of many projects that intersect public, environmental, and community art.
