THE GAME OF LOSS AND DEATH: Reetta Gröhn-Soninen and Satu Kalliokuusi

29.4.2026 - 23.5.2026

Welcome to the opening ceremonies on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 5–7 p.m!

Humanity is currently playing a kind of survival game of loss and death, and the solution is on this decade. January-August 2024 has been a record warm period. The average temperature of the Earth has been 0.70 °C higher than the climate reference period 1991–2020 and 0.23 °C higher than the same period in 2023. Steps have already been taken around the world to combat nature loss, but biodiversity continues to decline. Everyday life today also includes ever-expanding wars, the ecological disasters caused by which cannot even be estimated. In their works, the artists of the exhibition reflects on the views and feelings we experience in the current times and how we can endure this very demanding world situation in one way or another. And how can nature endure it?

The exhibition features wooden sculptures made by Gröhn-Soininen for this exhibition, as well as Kalliokuusiʹs latest paintings with natural plant inks and soy tempera.

REETTA GRÖHN- SOININEN (b. 1969 Joensuu)
is a sculptor from Joensuu. She graduated from the Turku Drawing School in 1993. Gröhn-Soininen makes figurative sculptures from wood. Above all, she sculpts emotion and movement. Emotion moves, shifts the focus of the experiencer. The sculptures are colorful. Color in sculptures is a very physical element. It is considered, but free. Its random flow is an important counterbalance to the discipline of sculpture. Gröhn- Soininen has been actively holding exhibitions since 1993. Her works are in the art collections of the Joensuu Art Museum, the Karelian Culture Promotion Foundation, the Huss Hospital District and the state. In addition to her own artistic work, Gröhn-Soininen is an active organizational activist. She has served on the boards of the Finnish Association of Visual Arts, Kuvasto and the Finnish Sculptorsˈ Association, among others.
