Horizon

I have been studying and reflecting on the horizon and on explorers who hope to see something beyond it. I have also been thinking about unfamiliar places, strange atmospheres, and exotic stories.
When you look out towards the distant horizon at sea, it can feel both frightening and safe at the same time. Thoughts of death and loneliness may arise, yet there is also a sense of security in looking into the distance: there is nothing threatening in sight. At the same time, the horizon is fascinating because it suggests the possibility of travelling, no matter how far, to foreign lands and on journeys of exploration.
My paintings are large, ranging from 105 × 105 cm to 120 × 145 cm. I work mainly with oil and acrylic on linen canvas. My paintings always begin with colour. As source material, I have used, among other things, photographs taken with mobile phones and sent to me by friends during their travels.
I am interested in painting itself and in the painting process, in relationships between colours and in creating new colour mixtures. I explore how colours can create images. Intuition and freedom are important elements in my work.
I have studied atlases and wondered about distant and exotic places. I would like to travel anywhere myself. A journey of exploration also means encountering reality and having one’s assumptions clarified: our own imagined versions of places are not always correct. Yet exploration can also mean discovering things we did not even know existed.
I want to remain connected to facts, while at the same time I am fascinated by imagination. In my most recent paintings, I have wanted to move away from reality—not only from the actual colours of the landscape, but also towards the realm of fantasy.
